Parsonage-Turner syndrome is characterized by an ache begining in and around the shoulder, at the neck or at the base of the skull which gets increasingly more severe. Pain is followed by muscular weakness, sensory and reflex impairement. EMG is the most valuable method for the diagnosis. Therapy is usually symptomatic and recovery occurs within a few weeks to 2 years. Parsonage-Turner syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with a new-onset shoulder pain. Early recogninition of this condition  may prevent unnecessary surgical intervention and enables us to predict functional recovery.
