Bone Mineral Density And Grade of Knee Osteoarthritis

To examine the inverse relationship between osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, we assessed bone mineral density and knee osteoarthritis (according to American College of Rheumatology criteria) in 92 female patients with the mean age of 61.58±7.4 years. Knee osteoarthritis was evaluated with anterior-posterior weight-bearing radiograph in extension and graded on a 5 (0-4) point scale according to Kellgren-Lawrence criteria. Of the cases; 21 had grade 0 osteoarthritis, 39 had grade 1 osteoarthritis, 22 had grade 2 osteoarthritis and 10 had grade 3 osteoarthritis. The mean femoral bone mineral density (neck) was 0,7518±0.11 gr/cm2 (DEXA). There was no significant correlation between bone mineral density and the grade of knee osteoarthritis (p>0.05). In conclusion, some factors may have effect on bone mineral density and osteoarthritis but the role of osteophytes is still controversial.
