The Effectıveness of Back School in Patients with Radicular and Non-Radicular Low Back Pain: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of “Back School” in low back pain patients without radicular leg pain (Group 1) and with radicular leg pain due to lumbar disc herniation (Group 2). Current study included 20 cases in each group that were matched according to age, sex, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), body mass index (BMI) and duration of pain. Back School programme developed by the Deparment of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Istanbul Medical Faculty, was applied to both groups. Three assessments were made before and 1 and 3 months after the treatment. The parameters that have been evaluated were intensity of pain (VAS), lumbar mobility (flexion and extension), functional disability (Oswestry Functional Scale) and lumbar muscle endurance testing. All the assessed parameters showed significant improvement in both groups especially after the third month. Duration of analgesic intake and analgesic doses decreased significantly in Group 2, but not in Group 1. In addition functional parameters concerning functional disability were much more in Group 2 than Group 1. It was concluded that patients who have radicular leg pain were profitted much more the standart back school programme.
