The Effect of Complications on Cognitive and Functional Development in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients Complications seen in traumatic brain injury patients (TBI) during rehabilitation period may be life-threatening for patients and also may interfere with the participation of the patient to the active rehabilitation, prolong rehabilitation period and increase the cost. The purpose of this study was to define the complications in TBI patients and their effects on rehabilitation process. Forty patients were included (34 male, 6 female) in the study. Patients were assessed by Disability Rating Scale (DRS), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Mini-Mental Status Exam (MME) at the begining and at the end of the rehabilitation program. Complications at admission and during hospitalization were recorded. The most frequent complication was spasticity followed by contractures and pressure sore. Patients were divided into two groups according to the number of the complications. Differences between the groups (only one complication, multipl complications) in regards of age, duration of disase, length of stay at the rehabilitation center, FIM and DRS scores at discharge were statistically significant (p<0.05). Differences between the groups in regards of duration of coma, posttraumatic amnesia and MME scores were not stastistically significant (p>0.05)
