Functional Assessment Methods in Pediatric Rehabilitation Pediatric functional outcome measures are not used as frequent as in adults. The difficulty in using those methods may be due to variations in our aims, age of children and type of disease. The major clinical purposes for pediatric functional outcome measures summarized in this article are prediction, discrimination, description and evaluation. Predictive functional outcome measures may be used to identify which children are at risk for future functional deficits, who will improve with rehabilitation services. Discriminative methods emphasize the difference between individuals or groups. Descriptive instruments used for treatment planning, may need to be sufficiently detailed in order to determine limiting factors in functional performance. Evaluative methods should be able to detect longitudinal clinical change in the functional performance of individuals or groups such as Pediatric Functional Independent Measure (WeeFIM). The method of choice differs depending on the functional areas to be measured. Different methods are used for motor functions, daily living activities and developmental areas.
