Serum magnesium and zinc levels in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis and the effect of calcitonin on these elements - There are very rare longitudinal studies reporting the effects of calcitonin therapy on trace minerals in postmenopausal osteoporosis despite the documented inovolvement of trace minerals in normal keletal metabolism. Several trace, minerals, particularly magnesium (Mg) vand zinc (Zn), esential for organic bone matrix synthesis has been known for at least three decades. The present study was designed to test if the mineral profile was different between 50 osteoporotic and 20 non-osteoporotic postmenopausal women, and to evaluate the efficacy of calcitonin therapy at during six month on this trace minerals in postmenopausal osteoporotic women. In our study, the serum values of Mg (p<0.05) and Zn 8p<0.001) were significantly lower in the patient group than controlgroup. In addition, there wasn't statistical different between patient and control group from the point of levels of serum Ca, P, ALP (p>0.05). Statistically significant improvement, seem to happen, from the point of levels of serum Zn at the first month and Mg at the third month in the patients receiving calcitonin therapy. While there was significant different between patient and control group at the basiline, there wasn't significant different at the third month. These results suggest that 1) calcitonin therapy regulated Mg, Zn levels in postmenopausal osteoporosis, 2) when serum Ca, P were normal in postmenopausal osteoporosis, serum Mg, Zn were nore useful for evalution, 3) further studies are essential to evaluate the role of dietary composition on the manifestations of osteoporosis.
