Comparison of the antiinflammatory effects of diclofenac and bioptron on chronic adjuvant arthritis in rats - The antiiflammatory effects of diclofenac and bioptron on chronic adjuvant arthritis were compared in this study. Our aim was to propose bioptron as a safer method and as an alternative mode of therapy for arthritis, especially in conditions reported to limit or preclude the use of NSAIDs.
Four groups of animals, each consisting of 6 Wistar rats, were used in the experiments. All rats were inoculated intradermally into the plantar surfaces of their left hinds paws with 0.1 ml of Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA) in the first day. Group 1 served as control for the other groups. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th groups were treated with diclofenac (1mg/kg, i.p.), bioptron (3 min/day), or with a combination of the two, respectively. The treatments were started on day 17, and continued until day 27. The paw edema was measured with a special micrometer on days 0, 17, 20, 23 and 27. All 3 groups showed significantly reduced pw edema compared with the control group (p<0.05). Moreover, significant reduced paw edema was also observed in all groups, when the edema in the beginning and in the end of the treatments were compared 8p<0.05). However, diclofenac alone or the combined treatment reduced the paw edema more significantly than the bioptron treatment (p<0.05). These results indicate that bioptron treatment can be an alternative mode of therapy for arthritis.
