Comparison of examinations made by electromyography and magnetic resonance imaging in carpal tunnel syndrome - The aim of this study is to evaluate theresults obtained in MRI in cases diagnosed as CTS by EMG and physical examination. a total of 43 cases consisting of 23 CTS patients and 20 controls were recruited for this study. İn all cases th emedian nervediameter rations measured at the levels of psiform bone and distal radio-ulnar joint, the ratios of bulging in flexor retinaculum and the intensity of the median nerve were evaluated by MRI. The measurements of median nerve diameters and the bulging ratios of flexor retinaculum revealed a significant difference (p<0.001) between the patinets and the controls group. Hyperintensity of the median nerve was observed in 20 cases in the group of patients while it was seen inonly 3 cases in the control group. We found no significant relations between the findings obtained by EMG and MRI. İn colclusion we suggest the use of MRI evaluation together with electrodiagnostic methods especially for investigating the etiologic factors and the reasons of proximal origin which lead to a neuropathy in the median nerve. Naturally the MRI examination alone definitely can not help for the evaluation of the electrophysiologic state of the nerve.
