Back and leg pain as a cause of herniated lumbar disc is a common problem of the general population.As a result, general practitioner as well as internist, neurologist, orthopedist, neurosurgeon and physical therapy specialists face a lot of certain cases in their daily office practice. In this study, we reviewed the anathomophysiological and pathophysiological aspects as well as the clinical pictures, differential diagnosis, surgical indications, surgical techniques and complications of lumbar disc disease in the light of our clinical exşperience and the recent literature. We particularly emphasized our criteria of patient selection for surgical intervention and described the microdiscectomy technique, that we use for surgical treatment of lumbar disc hernia.
