The relationship between the COL1A1 gene polymorphism and osteoporotic vertebral fractures has been revealed in some populations but not in others. In this pilot study we investigated whether the COL1A1 gene polymorphism predicts bone mineral density (BMD) and vertebral fractures in Turkish women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. 170 women had genetic analysis. Of these, 113 women were diagnosed as postmenopausal osteoporosis based on the WHO criteria. Remaining 57 women served as control group. The following genotype frequencies that we discovered were similar to those that had previously been observed in other studies and were consistent with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium: GG 62.9% (n=107), GT 35,3% (n=60), and TT 1,8% (n=3). In addition, a radiological examination revealed that 49 (43%) patients had vertebral fractures. In the end, our results led us to conclude that there was no relationship between the COL1A1 gene polymorphism, and vertebral fractures and also BMD.
