Is Generating Normalization Data in Three-Dimensional Gait Analysis of Different Age Groups a Necessity?

Objective: It is known that the gait pattern varies by age. Our aim was to compare the gait analysis data of different age groups to demonstrate the necessity of creating 3-D gait analysis data normalization in different age groups.
Material and Methods: Fifty-nine healthy subjects (age range: 5 to 21) who did not have a precursor disorder for gait pathology were included in the study. Subjects were divided into three groups. Group 1 consisted of 19 subjects aged 5 to 8, Group 2 of 21 subjects aged 9 to 13, and Group 3 of 19 subjects aged 14 to 21. Three dimentional gait analysis was performed to individuals. Temporo-spatial, kinematic, kinetic paramaters were compared among these groups.
Results: Except gait velocity,all temporo-spatial variables differed significantly between groups. A moderate correlation was detected between the subjects’ height and limb length and stride time, stride length, and step width; a moderate and inverse correlation between the subjects’ height and limb length and cadence. Knee flexion was significantly higher in Group 1 during the heel strike (K1, p=0,00), knee extension was lower in Group 1 during the terminal stance phase (K2, p=0,026), and peak knee flexion was significantly higher in Group 1 during the initial swing phase (K3, p=0,00).
Conclusion: Our study has shown the necessity for an age-based gait analysis data from healthy subjects.
