Special Features of 1120 Patients With Chronic Mechanical Low Back Pain: Back pain is the second leading symptom that prompts visits to physicians after commoncold and is a major cause of work day loss. The rising cost of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as well as the huge economic impact on industry due to low back pain. For this reason, recognition of risk factors and features of chronicity are of importance. In this paper, 1120 patientswith chronic mechanical low back pain who were given Back School programme or attended Back Unit in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department of İstanbul Medical Faculty between 1992-1997 were evaluated. Demographic features and functional impairment were recorded. Most of the patiens were women (% 72.3) and housewives (% 70). Disc pathologies were the most reason of back pain and functional limitation scores were moderate. It was concluded that, sex is a rick factor for back pain and functional impairment must be evaluated.
